Hairspray
“Broadway’s Big Fat Musical Comedy Hit.” Based on the 1988 John Waters film, Hairspray is a peppy musical set in 1962 Baltimore. It follows the adventures of pleasingly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad, as she pursues her dream of dancing on The Corny Collins Show. Her rising local celebrity status affords her an opportunity to champion the cause of racial integration in Baltimore. The music is fun and upbeat—‘60s style dance music and downtown R&B—with a story that also brings with it an important message: a social commentary on the injustices in much of American society in the 1960s.
